Lionel Messi will wear a special jersey in his last international match against Benin. The match will be played on October 6 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As a result, Messi did not win the World Cup title for the second time in a row. Messi announced his retirement from international football on August 31.
Unveiling the jersey, Messi wrote on Instagram, "One more match... A jersey for life.
The 39-year-old Messi will leave the national team as one of Argentina's most successful and colorful players. He scored 125 goals for the national team, including 21 in the World Cup.
Messi's achievements in international football are also unique. These include a World Cup, two Copa América titles, a Finalissima and an Olympic gold medal.
Initially, the jersey is understood to symbolically highlight various aspects of Messi's colorful career. Moving away from the traditional white-sky design of Argentina, it has been used in golden color. The large part of the back of the jersey is the shaded "Sun of May" – one of the most important parts of Argentina's national emblem. There is a smooth black and gold design on the sleeve edges.
