US President Donald Trump has taken the initiative to allow the use of tax-free red-dyed diesel on the road.

He issued an executive order on Monday in response to the rapid rise in fuel prices in the United States. This diesel is typically intended for use in agricultural machinery and other off-road vehicles.

The rise in fuel prices at the pump due to the Iran war has also put pressure on Trump's Republican Party ahead of the midterm elections. At a rally in Nebraska, Trump told supporters that the executive order would officially lift the off-road requirement, allowing anyone to buy tax-free red diesel for any purpose. Admitting his unfamiliarity with red-dyed diesel, Trump joked, "I don't know what it is, but they say it's very good."

Red diesel is essentially the same as regular diesel, but it is not subject to the U.S. highway fuel tax. It is dyed red to make it easier to identify. However, the White House's statement on the announcement Trump made at the rally is somewhat limited in its explanation.

According to the information sheet, the tax on the use of red diesel on the road has been ordered to be suspended until the end of the year. In this case, no interest or penalties will be charged. At the same time, Finance Minister Scott Besant has been asked to consult with Defense Minister Pete Hegseth to find ways to completely abolish the tax in the future.

The White House also said that federal authorities and state governors will be able to stop inspections and waive taxes imposed on drivers for using red diesel at their discretion. However, the White House briefing did not mention Iran as a reason for the increase in energy prices. It cited the Russia-Ukraine war and a shortage of refinery capacity around the world as the main reasons for the increase in energy prices.

The White House also accused Democrat-controlled states of closing refineries in the name of environmentally friendly or 'green energy' policies. At the Nebraska rally, Trump also praised a deal reached with Europe this month that will release 100 million barrels of refined diesel from the strategic reserve over the next four months.

Trump has previously raised the possibility of banning diesel exports from the United States, which is widely used in trucks, agricultural machinery and construction.

Diesel prices in the United States have hit record highs of more than $6 a gallon in recent weeks, as Russia's restrictions on exports after the Ukrainian attack damaged its energy facilities have further pressured global fuel supplies and prices.
